James River Expedition: Glen Wilton to Glasgow

$1300, Boys and Girls, Ages 12 – 16 | 5 Days / 4 Nights | In partnership with Twin River Outfitters, Buchanan, VA

Paddle, fish, and camp your way down one of Virginia’s most iconic rivers on this 5-day canoe adventure! Beginning in Glen Wilton and finishing in Glasgow, campers will travel nearly 40 miles through the scenic upper James River valley, exploring a stretch rich with wildlife, mountain views, and fishing opportunities.

Along the way, campers will learn to paddle moving water, read river currents, and safely navigate riffles and rapids—all while casting for smallmouth bass, sunfish, and other native species that make the James one of the best warmwater fisheries in the state. Evenings bring campfires, riverside dinners, and time to relax or cast a line as the sun sets.

Led by experienced Virginia Outside guides and supported by Twin River Outfitters, this trip blends adventure, skill-building, and fun in the great outdoors. It’s the perfect week for young anglers and adventurers ready to experience the Upper James River Water Trail up close!

What to Expect

  • Paddling & Scenery: Each day offers a manageable paddle through pools, riffles, and Class I-II rapids, framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains. The river banks alternate between forested slopes and open stretches, giving both dramatic views and calm stretches perfect for contemplation.
  • Fishing: The Upper James is home to smallmouth bass, rock bass, sunfish, and more. Whether casting off the canoe or from riverbanks, anglers will find plenty of chances to reel in something memorable.
  • Camping Under the Stars: Nights are spent at riverside campsites, drifting off to the sound of flowing water and waking to crisp mornings of birdsong. Campfires, meals cooked over open flame, storytelling—and possibly a moonlight paddle or two.
  • Navigation & Safety: Gear, safety orientation, boats, paddles, life jackets, maps, and shuttles are provided. Guides will help you read the river, choose lines through rapids, and find the best camping spots.

Who This Camp is For

  • Participants who appreciate both adventure and relaxation: paddle, fish, explore, relax.
  • Those with moderate physical fitness who are comfortable being active for multiple days and carrying light gear.
  • Anglers who want to combine paddling with fishing in a scenic but accessible river setting
  • Campers seeking an immersive outdoor experience—canoeing, camping, nature, river ecology—rather than just a day trip.
