Register  2020 FALL HIKING

NOVEMBER 7 & 8, Ages 11-14, $325

Join Virginia Outside for a weekend of hiking this fall! We will travel from Richmond to Shenandoah National Park where we will take on 10-15 miles of trail within the park while taking in the spectacular views of fall in Shenandoah. Campers will learn basic backpacking skills such as reading a map, shelter and tent basics, camp cooking, and more. Fall is the perfect time to camp while it is still warm throughout the day and cools down enough to enjoy a campfire & s’mores in the evening!
We will depart from Richmond Saturday at 7:30 AM and drive to the Big Meadows Campground in Shenandoah National Park. Saturday we will spend the day on a loop hike to visit nearby waterfalls before returning to Big Meadows for the night. Sunday morning we will rise early to pack up camp, drive to a nearby trailhead and hike to the peak of Hawksbill Mountain (the highest peak in the park!) and enjoy a mountain top lunch before we hike out to depart from the park. We will plan to return to Richmond on Sunday afternoon at 3 PM for drop off. Optional pick up & drop off in Charlottesville at 8:45 AM Friday and 1:30 PM on Sunday.
Virginia Outside will provide all group camping gear including group cooking equipment, first aid kits, tarp shelter, etc. Campers are asked to provide their own personal equipment such as a backpacking pack, tent, sleeping bag, and hiking boots. We are encouraging everyone to bring as much of their own equipment as possible to reduce the amount of shared items but we do offer rentals for certain larger items including:
  • Backpacking Tent: $50
  • Backpacking Pack: $50
  • Sleeping Bag: $25

Full itinerary & packing list will be emailed to you after registration.
