Summer Camps on the River - Kayak
This week offers campers the unique opportunity to explore the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries from a sit-on-top kayak.
Working with the Summer Camps on the River Program, campers spend their evenings in the dorms at Christchurch School and their days plying the nearby waters from a kayak.
Campers will learn or advance sit-on-top kayaking and kayak fishing skills. Our staff of ACA (American Canoe Association) certified counselors will instruct campers on safety, paddling, and general maneuvering of a sit-on-top kayak. As campers learn throughout the week at various locations, we will incorporate fishing, sightseeing and touring while paddling on all types of water from saltwater marshes and tidal rivers to local freshwater ponds and lakes. A highlight of the week is the overnight camping trip on the upper Rappahannock River where campers will fish for smallmouth bass and learn to navigate class I and II rapids before camping right on the river for the evening and enjoying a good meal.
A kayak is a great way to get close to nature and we expect to see bald eagles, ospreys, herons, deer and beaver. When we are fishing our catch will include large and smallmouth bass, catfish, sunfish, crappie, spot, croaker, and maybe a redfish or two. Kayaks, paddles, life vests, and fishing gear are provided.
